I purchased a new rear park brake cable and there is a boot already on the cable; however, it is not the original looking ribbed boot. Are guys cutting the boot off that is already on there and then sliding the original ribbed boot on? However, the steel ball at the end of the cable that holds the cable to the E brake assembly prevents one from sliding the boot on?? The boot tappers to a point and this is where i'm having trouble stretching the rubber over the steel ball. Any suggestions....Maybe i need to be more forceful but i'm afraid i'll tear the boot.

No, I was able to pull it off. I was also missing one side of the cable due to Bubba owning it before me. But I saved what I could of the originals.
And I should have said to use silicone grease, not silicon.

There are (or were) a few companies selling these cables with the correct boot already installed awhile back. I believe that I bought mine from Paragon. This was about 2010.
Silicone grease and some heat from a hair dryer, or a hot soapy water solution, are probably your best bets at this point to replace these rubber boots.

Not to get off subject but!!
I bought new cables so all would look new when doing my frame off. My old boots were not in great shape. The new ones were worse!! They cracked, crumbled and are falling off. The car was not out of the shop or started.
My shifter boot ( never installed) rotted on the bench! My clutch rod boot and lever boot were all new and are unusable because they are falling
apart. What's up with the rubber. I sent the shift boot back before I used it and got another that has rotted also.

Need to get it finished and back on the road. That's what that old car needs right now.
I know you are trying…….
Not certain about the rubber products, as I also see some of the same things. I'm guessing they are all from offshore. The best rubber products that I have used all come from DR REBUILD in Connecticut. His rubber and "soft" parts are the best out there. However, they may not all be NCRS correct.
