66 Hazard Flasher - Need some help

I managed to purchase a 66 hazard flasher for a reasonable price; however, someone in the past cut off the connectors and just left the wires coming out of the switch assembly. Fortunately they did not cut the orange power wire.

I think I have the wiring figured out and I have the crescent connectors from an old wiring harness that I will use to restore the assembly. I would like verification of the wiring from someone who has one that is not installed. I also need some measurements of how long to make the wiring.

The attached picture is of another flasher that was for sale on Ebay, but was a LOT more expensive that the one I ending up buying. I added some notes and overdrew lines showing the wire measurement I need. Picture with clipped wires is the one I purchased off Ebay.

Anyone got one out of the car and willing to give me some help?

    Thanks,

    Don

    Don,

Try these on for size . Let me know if you need more . My crude hand measurements of the wires between large and small connectors is 4 inches , and 15 inches from base to the edge of the connector , for the long one , if stretched out straight .

Thanks Jim, that is what I needed to see.
If you don't mind, could you compare the diagram I have attached to wiring on your unit. From your picture and others I have seen, the switch has two purple wires, yellow, dark blue, light blue and green (not including the orange power wire). These wires go to the large crescent connector then loop to the small connectors. Three other wires (white, gray, and back) run between the small connectors and the large connector.

      Thanks again,

      Don

        Don,

That looks correct to me . However just in case I missed something , here are some good close ups.

Though some might be interested in seeing the finished flasher assembly. The first picture is as I purchased the flasher, notice other than the orange power line, all the others had been cut off and the connectors did not come with the assembly. The second picture is of the flasher after I finished it this AM. I got the large crescent connector off an old dash wiring harness, and the two smaller connectors from an old turn signal switch assembly.

Nice work, Don. I liked the idea of having a hazard flasher so added one to my 65 and 66 Coupes. The 66 with it's single red taillight per side really benefits by having the flasher.

Ok I have the opposite problem for wire lengths: orange wire was cut. Can anyone give lengths for the orange wires?

The orange wire on my flasher is 35 1/2" measured from where it exits the housing to the tip of the connector.

                    Jeremy and Don,

Not sure that it matters all that much , but that flasher must have been from a Full size car . My orange wire only measures 27 inches .

Jim - About 25 years ago I ran across a guy at a swap meet selling an NOS Hazard Flasher in the original box with the original instructions and I'm pretty sure there was only one flasher available for all models because the instructions covered multiple Chevrolet models.

Re: 66 Hazard Flasher - Need some help

I have a NOS in the box flasher kit at home so if anyone needs more info or specific details I could probably provide them. As Mike stated, it fits multiple car models per the instruction sheet and also includes several different mounting brackets for those various applications.

FYI - If I recall correctly, it doesn't fit all 1966 models due to physical variations of the wire harness column connectors. I believe the connectors on my NOS kit are small crescent shaped and as an example, don't match the style of connectors used on Chevelles/El Caminos (or I probably would have installed it on one of my 1966 non-Corvette cars already).

Maybe they made more than one kit back then for some of the other applications? Out of curiosity, I'll check my 1968 Chevrolet parts book tonight to see if it lists more variations of these kits.

Charlie - I dug out my old copy of the Hazard Flasher instructions and notice that although that kit had instructions for the various Chevrolet models, it looks like Chevelles and full size Chevys required 'cutting off the existing hazard harness connectors', followed by attaching new terminals to the wires and inserting them into the 'new' connectors. Been a while but I guess the kit must have included additional gang connectors as well as those brackets depending on which model it was being added to. In the case of my 65 El Camino, I was able to 'plug and play' and didn't have to do any cutting. Same thing when I added 4-way flashers to my '64 Pontiac GTO using a 66 Pontiac version of the same flasher unit.

you could be right. I got mine off EBay, so not sure what it was originally on. Makes sense that the power line might be longer for a full size passenger car.

                              Mike,

Just checked the contents of my NOS kit. It contains a small parts bag that has two mounting screws, some clips to physically support wires, and a split metal plug-in adapter. There weren't any new wire terminals in the small parts bag.

Based on the visual and written instructions for a couple of the various models, it looks like it does require cutting the existing hazard unit wires, add new terminals and then install them into "new connectors" as you stated. I'm not sure those new connectors were ever part of the kit, since the components I have on hand barely fit inside of the GM box to start with.

Maybe you were supposed to buy the correct terminals and matching connectors separately if you needed them for those specific models?

Wish this was a plug-n-play for my '66 El Camino, because I don't have the heart to cut the NOS harness and use this kit on it.
