Re: Mike Hunt's data - how bad do we want it

It was either Sept/Oct/Nov 2007 that a van from Ketterling loaded up all of Mike's material as his heirs wanted to sell the house ASAP.

Can't recall if Ken Kayser was there at the time or not with the van from Ketterling.

Some time in the past someone checked on the situation at Kettering. At that time all of Mike's stuff was in storage at Kettering, but nothing was being done with it.

There was no funding to attempt data retrieval.

I am thinking that this is something that NCRS should look into funding.

It would be a shame to lose all of this data.

Re: Mike Hunt's data - how bad do we want it

OK, I got a reply from one of the archivists at Kettering University about Mike Hunt's collection:

"We have went through the collection and have organized and boxed the collection for storage. We have not yet found a facility that can retrieve the information from the disc that were in the collection. What we have, is available for researchers by appointment., Monday-Friday."

I really think that this is a task that NCRS should consider undertaking. The information is valuable, and a published collection of Mike Hunt's RPO 1956/1957 data would generate some income to offset the effort.

Where do we go next with this?

I wonder where someone still owns an Apple old enough to read his discs.

If some of Mike's published information is needed (As in the Vette Vues Magazine); I have copies of his Research Project 1956/1957. I also have some of the purchased information from him-A Study of Surviving 1956 Corvettes by Exterior Colors and VIN Numbers - 1956------1992, 36 years, Survivor-Cars Report - 1956 Corvette Drivetrains: A Summary of Casting and Other Numbers, From Surviving 1956 Corvettes. Is Bill Sangrey still working with the archives? Perhaps he has some ideas. Old Apple IIs shouldn't be a problem....

Re: Mike Hunt's data - how bad do we want it

Reading old Apple discs is easy. Plenty of current technology hardware and software that is used to recover data from old media. WE do it all of the time at NASA.

Step 1 is finding out what they actually have in the archives. A bunch of 5 1/4 inch floppy Apple discs? Something else?

Assuming 5 1/2 floppy discs, these have a limited shelf life. The sooner the data is retrieved, the better.

A MAC or PC laptop with a 5 1/4 disc driver reader (external) and the appropriate software will allow reading, copying, imaging the discs onto a more permanent media (including hard drives in the laptop).

Once the data is retrieved, then the real works begins with organizing, etc. the data for publication.

I really think our best option is to fund the archival effort at Kettering University. We can get a rough quote from the university to fund the time for a grad student to source and set up the appropriate hardware, recover all of the data that can be recovered onto CDs, and we can take it from there.

Kettering is not going to lend us the discs, so it is either pay them to recover the data, or send someone in with the appropriate hardware to recover the data.

This is exactly what universities do for research projects for grad students. And as I recall when I did this back in the dark ages, the cost was not unreasonable.

Time is running out for these discs.

Re: Mike Hunt's data - how bad do we want it

Where is the data? On a disc or a bad hard drive? If the drive is still good, can it be removed and then connected in as a storage/retrieval system like on a windows pc?

I will volunteer to help in whatever way I can.

Has anyone contacted the NCRS Team Leader and/or the NCRS National Judging Chairman regarding this matter?
If the data is available I am sure that there is a way to retrieve it and add it to the NCRS Archives.
