Muncie question

I am in the process of completing the rebuild of my M20 transmission. I have assembled the main shaft assembly clear of the counter gear and into the input shaft. With that complete, I noticed a play in the front bearing that I did not pay attention to during disassembly- see pic. Does this indicate the input shaft is not fully pressed or seated into the front bearing or is this play normal?

This is normal. The front bearing retainer will hold the bearing in place. The gasket for the retainer come in several thicknesses. Try the thinnest one first, push the retainer onto the bearing and pinch it between the retainer and the case. Try to pull it out. If you can't that's the right thickness to use. If you can pull it out, use a thicker one.

Sometimes I find it comical how many pics or notes I take when rebuilding parts and a detail like this still gets past me. At least I'm a bit wiser for the next time around.
