    Need some trouble shooting help

I have a 65 with a 327/365hp. Went out this morning to start it up. And had a loud grinding noise after startup. Turned it off and tried to restart. Wouldnt restart, and gave me a nasty sounding metal to metal grind trying to start. Any ideas where to start ?

Ron, Maybe a starter issue. maybe the starter Bendix drive was stuck engaged? This will generally make a lot of noise with the engine in fast idle mode. and will quickly destroy a starter motor in quick order.

Ron - I'd check out the starter first as well. While you're down there, maybe check out the tin inspection cover at the front of the bell housing.

Absolutely great advice! Damage to that cover will sound like the world is coming to an end; shouldn't cause a non-start condition I would think.

Another trick is to put the car in 4th gear and push it a few feet with the parking brake off (I know its a PITA) and try the starter again (gingerly). If it starts then you may well have a bad spot on the flywheel (not good) and pushing the car a bit gets you to a good spot on the flywheel as a test (but in no way addresses the problem!)

          Ron,
I'm betting on the starter bendix as posted earlier. If it sticks it will throw wires on the rotor.
Just a short story on a start up I had. I started the engine followed by loud thumps, followed by loud high pitch noises. It was a cat that decided to sleep in the shroud next to the warm radiator. Poor thing jumped thru the fan and right into the alt belt where it was stuck. It actually lived.
