Document Validation - Kudos to NCRS

I sent my Tank Sticker from my 1967 L71 Coupe in to NCRS. Tim Gilmore was great and the tank sticker was validated as authentic and original. My understanding is only NCRS has the GM data to do this and any counterfeiter would be pulling numbers out of thin air, as only one VIN goes with one ident number. My car has 12 options including KH bolt on wheels from the factory. Thanks again!

It is really great to have this service again. It is most comforting to have the validation certificate for your car's tank sticker, you can take that to the bank thanks to NCRS's great work over the years on the service.

since I bought my car from 2nd owner and talked to original owner year I bought it, I don't need any validation of my tank sticker which I removed, can't get any better than talking to original owner in the day.

True, very fortunate to have that kind of chain of custody. Few of us can have that advantage with these cars, they were very expensive most all my adult life and unobtainium financially until late in life.

Well, the problem is the numbers alone do not validate anything. There are many fake docs out there with the correct Ident and Order number to match the VIN. If NCRS is only using the ident and order numbers then this system will not work. I would hope they use additional criteria. Someone can take a legitimate small block document, use the numbers off it and then make a big block fake document for that vin. The numbers will line up with the vin and the GM shipping docs or NICB report and bingo, validation. I hope there is more to it. I would think there is.

There are many ways to spot fake docs. The IBM 1403 printer used in printing the originals leaves a very specific footprint that can not be duplicated by using a typewriter. You need to look up close. Not to mention all have some form of typesetting error which I will not reveal here. They also have other errors. It doesn't take much to spot them when you start comparing to the real docs. Many fake docs use the incorrect form. In some years 2 different forms were used, an early style and late style with both window and tank stickers. How things line up, at what serial number they changed, etc. There are many things to look for if you know what to look for.
