    Re: rear main seal

    Some swear by the old blue Fel-Pro seals and some by the newer red ones. I've used both with equal success (no leaks). Installed correctly, both work fine. Installed incorrectly, both will leak.

      Re: rear main seal

      I would recommend to consult a mechanic or machinist with a lot of experience. There are several methods and tips that can be learned from the guys with experience. It is best learned on the job with those knowledgeable leading the way. I have had one felpro blue seal to fail and replaced it with another in the car with success. The earlier seal had a bubble that would distort with heat and cause a leak. The same mechanic that taught me the replacement of the felpro blue seal also taught me how to successfully install a rope seal in earlier blocks.
      So find someone with a lot of experience and watch!!!!!!!!!

        Use GM #10121044 or Fel-Pro 2912. Both of these are the same and are high vacuum, premium fluroelastomer seals. A couple of points:

        1) The seals must be installed correctly and exactly as described in the factory service manual; otherwise, a leak will result;

        2) The crankshaft seal surace must be absolutely free of grooving in the seal contact area; if not, a leak will result.
