Grommet for cc vent, 68 L71

The grommet I need goes on the left valve cover on the 68 tri power big block. I have found this from Doc Rebuild in the past but I don't see it in his on line catalog. I have a call into them but so far, no call back.

So, anybody know of another source? Last time I looked the Doc was the only one. The grommet that goes on the right side is smaller and is also the one used on the left in C2 BB cars but the 68 uses a larger diameter on there.

    Thanks in advance

The grommet in the left side cover accommodates the PCV valve. It was originally GM #3933189. That part was discontinued in December, 1971 and replaced by GM #3989347. The latter remains available from GM to this very day. I do not know how the 3933189 and 3989347 differ.

Thank you. I'll search on those numbers. I thought the PCV was on the right side, so thanks for clearing that up, too.

After a quick search, it looks like I've been down this road before. The grommet that most vendors claim is correct is too small. It fits the hole in the right side cover but is too small for the pipe that goes in the left side. The link to a page on the Docs catalog indicates that "M" is for the left side and "N" is for the right side. I have purchased "M" from Doc before and it's correct. When purchasing from another vendor I can't recall now, I got the other one which they claimed was for the left side but isn't.

I guess I'll continue to try to get in touch with Doc

In the attached it's the illustration in the center of the page.

My mistake here. I wasn't thinking L-71 even though it's clearly stated in the title of your post. However, it doesn't change too much; it just reverses the grommets compared to the L-36 application. The PCV grommet for L-71 is on the right side cover. However, the actual grommets are the same as L-36. The original right side (PCV) grommet for L-71 (left side for L-36) was the 3933189 replaced in December, 1971 by the 3989347. The original left side grommet for L-71 (right side for L-36) was GM #3933188. It was also discontinued in December, 1971 and was replaced by GM #3989346. Both the 3989346 and 3989347 remain available from GM.

However, the Doc is the undisputed "King of Grommets" (as well as restoration source extraordinaire of so many other things). So, you can't go wrong with his stuff.

I just placed an order for the grommet with the Doc. They still have some but according to them they are discontinued. I ordered three.

It could be that they are very recently GM discontinued. I still show them as available but, sometimes, reality takes awhile to catch up with the system.
