    70 lt1

I've been told the half shafts should be shot peened on my car. The judging books says nothing of it. Can someone give me a correct answer to this. Thanks.

    Re: 70 lt1

    Hi james,
I was fortunate to attend the Advanced Judging Seminar at the Charlotte Regional the end of last week and fact that LT-! and bb half shafts were shot peened, and how that affected their strength and appearance, was briefly discussed as an aside while looking at a 69. I believe it was mentioned that tiny pieces of course cut wire was used as the medium.

I've had it done by an engine rebuilding shop.

I printed the word-for-word specifications from the Chevrolet prints on this board more than once. Seek and yea shall find.

I'd check with Bair's Corvettes or Quanta.

                Hi,
I was curious as to just what the specification for the finish on the half-shafts Terry referred to was.
                I found this:
"SHOT PEEN BOTH ENDS TO INTENSITY OF .014-.017 ARC

HEIGHT ON ALMEN "A" TEST STRIP. PEEN WITH .032-.035 DIA CONDITIONED
                CUT WIRE SHOT."
Now I know exactly what the appearance should be, and how to duplicate it.
                Or maybe not.
                Regards,
                Alan

Here is a company in North Carolina and other locations. You could check with them to see if they do cut wire shot peening. If they do not they may know of a company that does. Remember the shafts were peened only from around the welds ans shaft not the ends.

Alan is correct...it was performed using cut wire shot. The process erased evidence of the HAZ. There is a fellow, in Ohio, that does a beautiful job replicating the look. His name is Greg Gorniak and his number is 937-369-5519. Regardless of the the fact he is an airline pilot, he still does a great job:-)

                          Hi,
Is this a shot peened finish?

ol' Danny Bernoulli was a nice guy. I think they lived just down the street from the Thud gang.
