My L71 carburetors run perfectly, but after driving and coming to a stop the idle is up around 1500. As soon as the accelerator is kicked, the idle drops to about 800. Is this most likely a weak return spring and if so what is the correct replacement?

This is a familiar problem. If you stepped on it while out there and opened up the secondaries one of the carbs may be stuck slightly open. My problem was a warped baseplate. Could also be linkage or spring in carb vacu pot. Took me a while to find this little PIA

Re: Tri Power Carbs idle
I rebuilt the carbs on my son's 69 L-89 and they still had issues - most of which we worked out. Now my son has a new set on order, primarily for the reason that he wants them to appear new and be stamped properly. It will be interesting to see if they run better. I doubt it, and expect to have to set them up what with their silly linkages and all.

Re: Tri Power Carbs idle
Typical complaint when the idle screw is too far in. They can idle @ 500 to 600 RPM all day if the idle circuit is increased 2 drill sizes. When idle is set high the transfer slots are exposed causing a "hunt & peck" idle problem.- Top
