64 steering wheel shake

My 64 steering column shakes when the engine is on fastidle (car is parked).
The crankshaft andflywheel with pressure & friction plateswere balanced when rebuilt 15 years ago.
is this somewhat typical and I should justlive with it or should I try replacing / rebuilding the balancer ?

Jim, I have a '64 L76 like you. I did not have a steering wheel shake problem, my wheel traveled in and out about 1/4 to 3/8s of an inch - it was like I had a telescoping steering wheel but I don't. The problem was the rag joint - it was totally shot but surprisingly, there was no noticeable issues when the car was being driven, it steered fine. Point is - I think you might have an undetected steering / safety issue that is worth investigating to the nth degree - I would not rest until I identified the cause and determined if it was or was not a safety issue.

The rag joint was replaced 15 years ago so I didn't think that would be the problem. I will double check.
