    65 BB dip stick ID

    A friend just got a deduct on his C2 BB dipstick (to tall). When I got home I checked mine . I had a NOM 1966 396 in my car when I bought it but it had most of the correct bolt on parts . My dipstick has the correct short tube and the dipstick is the correct length and is "stamped" ADDl lFULL ENGINE OIL M not embossed . It is the narrow stick 3/16 . I have read conflicting info on the width 3/16 vs 1/4 . and stamped vs embossed . What is correct for a early 396 (17346) ?

    I don't see how it could have been 1/4" wide. The ID of the lower, swaged-down end of the dipstick tube (where it fits into the orifice in the pan) is 0.255". A small amount of that ID is probably lost when the tube is pressed into the orifice. So, if the dipstick were 1/4" wide, one would have great difficulty inserting it past this point. Of course, it could have been something wider than 3/16" but less than 1/4".

        My guess is that it's original.

          Bill,

          The stampings are correct and the part number in the 65 Corvette AIM is 3860316.

          My Chevrolet Parts Catalog (May 1965) lists GM # 3860318 for the 65 Corvette (396).

          My !966 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 1965) lists GM # 3860316 for the 65-66 PASS (396)(exc. S.H.P.) and 66 PASS., CORVETTE (427)(exc. S.H.P.) and GM # 3860318 for the 66 PASS., CORVETTE S.H.P (427).

          My 1967 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Apr. 1967) lists GM # 3860316 for 65-66 PASS., CORVETTE (396,427) and 67 CORVETTE (427).
          GM # 3860318 is describes as "chrome" and for the 66 PASS., CORVETTE S.H.P. 427.

          The 3860316 and 3860318 have the same "A" and "B" dimensions as follows:
          A = 17 13/32" (stop to FULL mark)
          B = 18 1/8" (stop to ADD mark)

          My 1965 Chevrolet AIM (UPC L35, sheet 5) describes the 3860316 dipstick as "GAGE ASM -OIL LEVEL COLOR CODE (PURPLE)".

            Bill,

            The one you describe is just like the one on the 396 that I restored, but a later VIN 22161. It took no deducts at all levels of flight judging last year. I'll try and snap a picture or two of it and post it here in a few days.

            Lets see some pictures of your current progress!!!

            Regards,

            James West

              Thanks James . Progress seems to have slowed down a bit , we have been doing some remodeling and yard work . I am almost done with the chassis and the body is ready for paint . engine work has not started yet .
