    1967 L79 carburetor

My '67 L79 carburetor is a holley and has no external sight plugs to view fuel level and no external needle and seat that can be adjusted like the carb on my '66 L72. There are two circular plugs of about 1/2" to 5/8" in diameter, one on the primary side and one on the secondary side. The one on the primary side is allowing fuel to seep out through the top of this plug as the engine is running. The one on the secondary side is dry. The exhaust smell leads me to think that the engine is running extremely rich and adjusting the idle mixture screws does nothing to affect this condition. Is this configuration correct for a '67 L79 holley carburetor and, if so, is the only way to set the float level through an internal adjustment which would require disassembly of the carb? There is no visible fuel dripping into the carb as the engine is running and both sides of the throttle plates are dry as well with the engine running. Any replies would be most appreciated. Thanks and have a safe and happy Memorial Day and thank you for your sacrifices to all of those who served and are being though of and remembered today!

    Joe,

You need to get the bowl repaired by someone that can epoxy the plug to stop the leak or replace the bowl with a new part. If you can't adjust the idle mixture with the emulsion screws the primary throttle blades may be open at idle to far and the engine pulls it's idle fuel from the transfer slots instead of the curb idle holes that are regulated by the emulsion screws.

The solution to this is to open the secondary blades some and close the primary blades.

I believe that Chicago Corvette supply has the correct '67 bowls.......To set the float level, bowl off the car, inverted, measure distance at fuel float toe via GM service manual....I would replace the bowl if the new ones are still available.....gas leaks on hot engine not good.....The 3810 carb is still available new also...Rich running can also be a blown power valve...Blown power valve can occur when the engine back fires thru carb...

Joseph, I bought a new fuel bowl for my Holley 650 spreadbore 6210 that I bought new in 1973 or 1974 and still in use on my 1968 L79. I bought the new Holley fuel bowl because of the leak from the top of the fuel bowl, had used JB Weld on it, but it only lasted 4-5 years before it leaked again. I purchased my new fuel bowl from JEG's and was very pleased with the service, the part came direct from Holley and was less expensive.
