    Re: Memorial Day 2015

U.S. Army Jan. 62 thru Jan. 65. Ordered my 63 L-76 in April 63 while at White Sands Missle Range, NM, then came down on levie just after I took delivery in August 63. Left the country in November 63, Vette went into storage. Next assignment was in Thailand with DCH/JUSMAG (former MAAG-Laos). We had only 64 people (half "O'" and half "E") with a MAP program 3 times larger than JUSMAG Thailand who had several thousand people. Had to wear many hats which included some "Sheep Dipping". Picked up Message traffic while on CQ about Tonkin Gulf fiasco. Went in country with AA H-34 to pick up downed "Yankee Team" Navy recon pilot. Did some plinking then with an M-14 (had 1 hour training on them in basic). Was able to ETS out in Jan. 65 (B4 Johnson's big unit landing in SVN). Got Vette out of storage, got married, had twin future USAF pilot sons, then headed back to Thailand to work on contracts there and in Saigon, SVN until Jan 71. Worked on MACVCORDS program as Ops Analyst on Hamlet Evaluation System HES (I, and the computer, picked the Hamlets to label VC). Returned home for good in 72. Left Vette in storage until I had a home and garage for it in 1976, and we been close ever since.

              Re: Memorial Day 2015

I was originally drafted and inducted into the US Army February ’67 at the ripe old age of 21.

After going through basic and infantry AIT at beautiful Fort Polk, Louisiana (home of the Jungle Warrior), OCS and an additional 2-year commitment didn’t sound so bad. Graduated from Artillery OCS at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in March 1968. I still did a tour in Viet Nam, July ’68 – July ’69 – 1/82 Artillery and 6/11 Artillery, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division.

When I got home from Viet Nam, I bought my first ’67 Corvette with what I had saved in Soldiers Deposit.

Similar to Michael's situation; I was one month away from being drafted in early 1962, but I chose the RA enlistment route to at least have a say in what I did while in the service. Instead of 2 years, I paid for my desire with an extra year. As it was, I too had ideas of going to OCS for a commission for perhaps more dignity, but in basic I watched the movie after 1 or 2 weeks of humiliation and decided these people were all crazy and I wanted to get through that bad experience as quickly as possible. As it was, I had two super assignments that would make anyone happy and proud to be a serviceman. However, on my ETS flight back home through Saigon, I saw the build up of what was a sign of things to come later in 1965. They offered me $5800 to re-up at Oakland Army Terminal and I wisely said "no thanks!"

SWAG is about 20~25% of NCRS members were in the Armed Forces. I'm basing this on the veterans percentage that attending last year's Convention in Kansas City.

I sure do. I still remember the day I went there to get on the bus for Indy. induction center & she came out yelling for us to come inside for a talk by some minister & I ask her what was she going to do if we didn't? Draft us? Randy Morton whose dad owned the Ford dealership was on the bus with me. As my Dad said after WW2 He wouldn't take a million $ for the experience but wouldn't do it again for a million $.
