    C-2 floor mats

I have a pair of slightly yellowish floor mats that are the thick style and look like an original or quite old set. Are their supposed to be any Part Numbers on these mats or should they be devoid of any markings (like mine are)? I have been told that the original sets had the following numbers on the bottom side nearest the seats:
    RMP 1713 1 DRIVERS SIDE
    RMP 1714 1 PASSENGER SIDE

I might be wrong but I believe they were dealer add-ons. Car didn't come from the factory with them.

Your correct, not an original GM accessory that would have come with the car, but dealer supplied. Just wondering if on the period correct floor mats that would have been from back in the day did they have part numbers of any kind?

I have seen originals with a part number down near bottom edge, on front I think. Kind of hard to see.

I agree. But a number of years ago I bought a box full from a liquidation sale of an old dealership. There were 30 pairs in the box. More than half of them had no numbers on the bottom or any where on them. So who really knows. As others stated they were not from the factory

Don, What kinda threw me on the OPs post is the use of the word "original". Although I guess a part that was sold over the counter (dealer install) could be called dealer original, I think of a original part as one that was installed on the car at the factory. If using the term original for a dealer part, at what place in time does it become a non original part? It was still sold by the dealer even if sold years later. (We really are a technical bunch aren't we)? I have seen originals with a part number down near bottom edge, on front I think. Kind of hard to see.[/QUOTE]

I use a pair for in the rain when driving long distances, they do fit well (my car is a real Corvette - it leaks). Don H.

Just checked a yellowed pair I have; No numbers at all on mine. Got 'em in 1972 when I was visiting the St. Louis assembly plant. Bought at the Chev dealer right across from the plant, on Natural Bridge Ave.. Here's the invoice. This might put a timeline on the numbers/no numbers.

How cool is that... thanks Wayne!

Glad this post came along. I have a yellowed pair that are heavy, thick and still very pliable. I've always believed they were not repops but there is no numbers on them either. Good to know they are just later service parts.

One thing to mention in the NOS box of mats that I bought not all were yellowed. Some of the mats that had barely a tinge of yellowing if any had numbers on them. Some with no numbers on them had yellowing. After getting them out of the box for a length of time they all seem to darken up. So again numbers or not, they all ended up looking the same.

I never had a typical dealer clear pair of mats, rather I had made some soon after I got the car using some typical in home type runners. Then, I finally bought some from Al Knock here during a winter meet about 5 years ago. I called them my killer mats as they had very small and few carpet grabbing tips on the underside. I usually enter my car feet first and these suckers would quickly slide forward under my feet lawsuit style. I soon trashed them. I replaced them with some real nice carpeted mats from Eckler's that matched my carpet color perfectly and fit like you'd expect from factory option mats on a new car. I love them. I wouldn't even use those clear ones for judging even if they were acceptable.

I bought a pair of Chevrolet bow tie "clear" (but so yellowed that they were almost brown) mats at a swap meet many years ago. I bought them because I believed them to be original. I stored them up in my garage attic for many years. A few years ago I came across them and they were very sticky. I tried to clean the stickiness off the mats but without any success so then I trashed them. I do have a pair of reproduction Chevrolet bowtie mats in my car that I bought back in November 1981. These mats have now yellowed.
