I was spring cleaning my garage recently and ran across engine parts from a professional rebuild of my '68 original 427/390 hp that took place over 7 years ago. I have old pistons, crank shaft, valves, rods, oil pump and a few other things. Is there any reason to keep this stuff. I have not needed it in 7 years so should I pitch it or give back to the rebuilder? Thanks for your replies.

Re: Engine Parts from Rebuild
Used pistons aren't usually worth saving due to wear and no economincal way to refurb. them.
What's wrong with the crankshaft and rods?
Valves are reusable if stem wear is no more than half a mil and grinding leaves enough margin on the head.
Oil pumps are reusable at least 90 percent of the time, but you can count on "professional" rebuilders replacing them 100 percent of the time, and of those at least half will have too much oil pressure.

What sort of crankshaft and connecting rods did the engine builder use in the rebuild? Big $$$$ specialty aftermarket parts or just remanufactured original-type parts? If the latter, your original parts could probably have been similarly rebuilt.
If an engine has been well cared for (e.g. regular oil changes), crankshafts are almost always re-usable without any journal grinding----just polishing. I'd much rather have an original standard journal size crankshaft than a remanufactured unit that will virtually always be ground undersize, sometimes as much as .030".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Engine Parts from Rebuild
All,
I miss spoke about the crankshaft, it was reused. It is the cam shaft that I have in my boxes of stuff. (big difference)
It sounds like, from the people who responded, that I should hang on to a few of these items and discard the rest.

Re: Engine Parts from Rebuild
You can measure the heel to toe dimension of the cam lobes, and if it's only worn a few thou it may be reusable, IF you marked the lifters to which lobe they mated to and the lifter faces are not significantly worn. If not, it's all junk.
