    71 SB Corvette Oil dipstick

My 71 small block/automatic car has an original appearing dipstick but the wording on the stick itself is different from the judging manual. The wording on my dipstick that appears above the "add, Full" marks reads as follows:
"use GM 6041-M Quality MS oil M". Does anyone know if this could be an original dipstick to my car? I have no reason to believe it is not. Thank you.

    Hi Seth,
The same info you posted appears on my base motor 71's dip stick.
I'm confident it's the original dipstick.

Thank you. My car is an ultra low milage survivor and it is good to confirm that the dipstick is correct. The Judging Manual should really be updated for the next edition to more accurately reflect information about the 1971 sb cars, recognizing that it is a work in progress and an extremely valuable resource to us all. In any event, I appreciate your help Alan.

        Seth,

The 1969-1971 Camaro, Chevelles, and Chevrolet models with 307/350 engines were issued a dipstick with "USE GM 6041-M-QUALITY MS OIL". The ones with the green plastic tip also had the letter "M" and the ones with the flattened tip had the letter "E".
The Corvettes dipsticks were a different length and had a black plastic tip with the letter "M". I have never seen a 1969-1971 Corvette dipstick with the letter "E".

IMO, your dipstick is original. Enclosed is a link that might be helpful.

Hi, I am looking for the correct oil dip stick and tube for my 71 Z and I found the correct part numbers still being produced by GM. Does anyone know if these are in fact the GREEN tip ones that are needed??? My assembly manual shows part number #3951576 for the stick and #3876870 for the...

            Seth,

My dipstick also reads "USE GM 6041-M QUALITY MS OIL M".

              Erich,

What is the build date of your 1972?

Based on my research starting sometime during the 1972 model year the dipstick stamping was changed to "USE SE ENGINE OIL". I believe that the "M" stamping is the manufacturer. The "M" dipsticks have the plastic end cap. The "E" dipsticks have a crimped end.

                Dave,

Build date is 11/30/71. The end cap is black plastic.

                  Erich,

I thought that your 1972 might have been made in the Fall of 1971. The dipstick with the "USE GM 6041-M QUALITY MS OIL" stamping makes sense on an early 1972 as the factory must have had these dipsticks on hand and they continued to issue them until the stock ran out. It would be interesting to find out when the change to the "USE SE ENGINE OIL" dipsticks took place.

My 1971 270 hp May 10 build dipstick also reads "USE GM 6041-M QUALITY MS OIL M and has the black plastic tip. I did not buy new but know history and feel it is the original dipstick.
