67 Coupe Cowl Recess Blackout Process

    HI:

I am in the process of correcting several issues on a "restored" '67 I just acquired and one involves the blackout in the cowl recesses. The photo is below... as is well known this area had blackout in it vs. the complete body color paint coverage shown in the photo.

My questions is this: what is the best process to simulate the blackout? Just mask everything and spray it in? Brush it?

Any information on what has worked for you in the past would be appreciated.....I want this to be accurate for judging vs. just visually present ..... I am sure you get the distinction.

    Regards
    Bill

    Bill,

I would think you could easily mask the area off (carefully) and spray the area with underhood black paint. Also, the clips that retain the cowl grill should be black phosphate, as well. (Mine were painted white with the car...deduct)

      Bill ,

As I recall GM used a Form that fit inside the hole and then just shot some semi flat black it there . As always "coverage varied ".

For your car , I would mimic the form in tape , then cover the rest of the car from over spray , than have at it with some semi flat krylon . The sloppier the coverage near the top , the more realistic .

I have a photo that should help.

        Jim & Leif:

Thanks!!! The mask off process and the semi flat sounds like a good process ---- I have the correct clips and screws --- and just got the windshield wipers and washers working so this should help get the cowl area a lot closer to being done...

The photo really helped a lot -----

        Thanks again!!!

        Regards
        Bill

          Bill ,

I know it's always worth more then the 1000 words to me !

Now let me ask you one . Did you replace your black plastic sleeves without cracking them ? I am on my third set and getting frustrated !

            Jim --

No I did not replace them --- the previous owner did so I had that much going for me --- I never changed them out on my 66 Bowtie either -- obvious reason --- unfortunately I don't have nay experience changing them --- sorry I could not help...

Finished up the black out process a few minutes ago ----- see the photos in the next post.

            Regards
            Bill

I hope you took the washer hoses out before you sprayed.........

Looks like the hoses were masked off with tape. Looks good

                      Bill,
Also, make sure the Phillips screws are black phosphate as well. Also, for judging purposes - make sure when you install the hoses you turn it where the ribs are facing up so the judges can easily confirm the ribs on them. Regards. ARA
