    1965 chassis detail

If anyone has a quick reference guide they made up for 1965 chassis restoration I would love a copy. I am at the chassis part of my restoration and keep flipping back and forth on finishes and bolts in the judging guide. A friend suggested I reach out and see if someone hasn't put together a quick reference guide for their personal use and would consider sharing. I'll get through it with the guide book but I hate to miss something ... Thanks Tim. Email tnaeser@comcast.net

I have a book somewhere called Corvette Restoration State of the Art that has a lot of good pics on the resto of a 65.

The best way is to pay attention to your parts as you take them off and clean them . When in doubt look at the judging manual .

A few things the current JM is incorrect. Probably one of the biggest errors is where it talks about "Mitting" the blackout. That didn't happen it was an urban legend that has never been proven. Hopefully the new JM revision will be out soon. I had a chance to look at the newer style JM, '66 I think, and there is no comparison. Loaded with picture and tons of details.

If something doesn't sound right don't be shy about asking questions here. I've posted several photo of my chassis, and the folks here are very helpful, with both little things and big things. For instance I had the cotter key bent in a non-typical fashion, that was pointed out and corrected.

Read as much on this forum and collect as many photos of know original cars as possible. Remember the old story...A Picture is worth a thousand words. Stay away from reproduction parts as much as possible, if an original part can be restored do it by all means.

Great advise and thanks. I had a look at a new JM for a different year and wow what a difference. Looking forward to seeing the new 65 JM. Nothing that has come off the car has gone in the garbage. Messing with the gas tank today. Plating finish is pretty well lost but tank inside is perfect. I was warned that the mitt concept on the exhaust was not correct. The assembly line picture with red body on background shows black almost to the exhaust manifold but from the camera angle is completely covered. I'll look for guidance when I get to that point before I start blowing black stuff sloppily on a new exhaust system :-) thanks again .. Tim

              Timothy,
It's funny you mentioned the fuel tank. I think for most people here that might be the exception to the reproduction part rule. If the car has not sat around for long periods of time then it might be okay. If your planning on driving the car nothing will drive you more crazy than a old fuel tank with contamination.

And nothing will make you more crazy than finding out the New Quanta Tank doesn't fit right without adjustments !

See Thread: Gas tank centering. Forewarned is forearmed !

                Have fun ,

Well that piece is important ! I just pulled the tank off the frame and really if is wasn't for the surface rust externally I would go with it. But there is now way to shine it up and make it new looking. Looking at Long Island Corvette Supply..... Sender is USA made !! They haven't let me down yet. I will certainly make sure it sits where the old one did ...sounds critical to be right on the money..... Good heads up ! Thanks Tim
