Anyone have a recommendation for a good assembly instruction manual for the Borg Warner T-10....specifically 57-63? All I have is the JG, the ST-12 and an older issue of Peterson Publishing's version. I've just acquired one that has a combination of parts and I want to restore it correctly. Thanks....

Re: T-10 assembly information
Brad-
The Chevrolet shop manuals (after 1957) show step by step "how to". If all else fails, let me know, and I can snail mail a copy to you. The TIM & JG shows which housings are correct for 1959. If you need 59 housings, let me know. Wayne- Top

Re: T-10 assembly information
Thanks, Wayne....any additional info you can provide me will be certainly appreciated. I'll contact you by e-mail. I've only rebuilt about a half dozen of these early T-10's and I've regularly encountered issues that I've had to overcome by making assumptions....like re-shimming the gear stack to achieve proper tolerances when re-using slightly worn (but within tolerance) reusable components. I've watched you-tube videos as well but most of these guys use short cuts and don't address the finer points.....- Top

Re: T-10 assembly information
Brad, what did you use for shimming the gears? I have been fighting a 3rd gear noise in my 63, and this winter I am going to take apart to re-check everything as this has been a on going problem as the transmission has already been apart once.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: T-10 assembly information
Try these. I used them to rebuild a T10 for a 60 restoration. First time I had done one and all went well.Don Harris

Re: T-10 assembly information
Joe/Donald/Ed and Wayne....Thanks very much for the info....There are several pieces of info in the writeup's that I can reapply. Obviously the more info one can gather makes subsequent rebuild's all that much easier and accurate.
When I rebuilt my last T-10 about 10 years ago (of which I took no photos and no notes) The trans was suffering from the common problem of popping out of 2nd gear. I noticed mucho linear slop in the mainshaft gears so I thought I'd reduce it a little bit (I'm not being very precise am I?....) So I then journeyed to a local mechanic who had some old 4 speeds laying around, along with a large box of parts. So....he allowed me to go through the box and I found a 2 flat shims that more or less matched the ones that I took off the mainshaft.....but they were about .010 thicker. I believe the tolerance is supposed to be .010 to .030 and these shims should bring it down to within range. So I said..."what the heck...I'll put them in". (along with new synchros and forks and a few other new parts) I did and the rest is history. This is the tranny that is currently in my '59. It shifts smoothly and without an excessive amount of noise on accel/decel.
Joe....You know what?.....I am located about an hour and a half south of you in Jackson, Missouri and there is no NCRS chapter here. There are a couple other straight axles in the area but I've kinda been on my own except for a high school buddy that is very fond of C2's. He and I (since early retirement) have restored 6 different C2's for friends in the area (3 different body-offs) to the degree they could afford. For an extremely nominal fee of course! All they wanted was a good looking driver but we built them cosmetically and numbers-wise to NCRS specs but none of them have the guts to join or participate in NCRS activities but we definitely encouraged them to do so....
I have put off joining the St. Louis Chapter for many years because I could not attend regularly.....but now I think it's time. In recent years I've been all over the eastern half of the US showing my car....But now I am driving it. I think a Corvette should be driven, not garaged. I tried to sell it once, but my wife cried her eyes out...she has a lot of memories with the car!
So, Joe....if you guys would have me as a member....Can you send me an application?- Top

Re: T-10 assembly information
Going thru the archives and ran across this thread. I have a T10 in major pieces and have never worked on any trans at all. Is this something that a novice can accomplish or is it best in the hands of someone with experience with them? Also, many years ago I bought the components pictured below and as you can see I will need to source all the smaller pieces and bearings, seals etc. is there a recommended vendor for them?
Extra info, have a 62 T-10 4 speed close ratio and all the factory manuals and ST-12.Attached Files- Top

Re: T-10 assembly information
Eric, I've done about 6 in my life. I think the first when I was 17 and that's a long time ago. No digital cameras at that time.
It's rather straight forward with the shop manual at hand. The area I screwed up on a few times was the metal speedometer gear. As I recall I mushed some of the threads and did not put it back exactly where it came off. The affect is, you immediately destroy the plastic gear in the cable and the speedometer doesn't work all that well. I used STP to hold the roller bearing inside the cluster gear during assembly. I changed the fluid a few times after rebuild.
Good Luck

Review the documents I attached in post #5. These were very helpful to me. I have done exactly two transmissions. A T-10 when I restored my 1960 and just did a Muncie from my 1966. Good instructions and keeping things in order helped me. I bought my parts, i.e. rebuild kits and other parts from D & L Transmission. Larry is very helpful. Their website is listed below.

Re: T-10 assembly information
Thanks guys!
I have been trying to do as many items as possible and I was hoping that this was another one.
I don't know if it is a benefit or a drawback that I am starting with new pieces and didn't have to disassemble it and evaluate the parts. My project came with a Muncie that I sold and over the past years have collected the T-10 piece by piece.
Thanks for the note on the speedo gear Harry, I will keep that in mind when it comes together.
Paul, I will check out the site and see if I can find any information that I have't already collected along with Don's pdf files.
I appreciate the lead Don. I have been looking at the normal C1 parts sources and I didn't find anything that goes to the component level of the T-10. Now I get to do some more shopping....... The first thing that I will do is go through the articles and take inventory of what I have and what I still need. Fortunately I believe I have all the major pieces.
Thanks again, I appreciate the encouragement!- Top
