    C2 Engine Fan Paint

My judging guide describes the paint on the engine fan to be "1964 fans are dip-painted black...". My questions are,
    1. What is it about such a dipped finish that makes it recognizable to a judge.
    2. There is no mention about the type of black paint that was used (gloss, semi-gloss, flat). What should it be?

    Thanks,
    Doug

    Doug -

It should be semi-gloss black, the same appearance as the radiator support (they both went through the same black flow-coat prime system in the adjacent passenger car/truck assembly plant).

Thanks John. Did the dip process produce any characteristics such as runs or thin spots? I may remove the fan and re-paint it before having the car judged again, but my plan would be to spray it in semi-gloss black rather than trying to find a container to accommodate the fan and enough paint to immerse it. Do you think having it the right color and gloss will cause it to pass judging or do I need to do something else?

        Doug -

Don't over-think this - painting with the correct color and gloss should take care of you. Almost everything that was flow-coated had runs and bubbles if you looked close enough, but each part was different depending on whether it was hung on a hook, placed in a basket, etc. There was no consistent pattern of paint defects for any given part.

          Here's close-ups of an original "529" fan that I was given in a box of parts by a father/son team that were resto-modding a '64 and '65.
