67 big block bell housing painted completely orange

Were some bell housing's painted completely orange? I have a 67' 427 390 HP car that came from the Tonawanda plant. It appears the entire bell housing was painted orange. Is this possible? I know several talk about overspray only on the part that is closest to the motor.

It would vary day to day engine to engine. But I don't think the whole part was painted.

        Dave,

I would say it is possible the bell housing was painted solid orange at the Tonawanda engine plant. I have a factory picture that shows them that way. I'm not saying that all of them were or were not done that way. I've posted the picture before. I'm not sure who I got it from. I don't have time to dig it up again right now. See if you can find it. If not, I can post it again some time this week.

Here's a good shot of the bell housing of my '66 big block as we're pulling the body off. Image shows the bell housing to be painted solidly.

OK, here's the picture I mentioned. My notes say it's from the Tonawanda plant.

Gosh, the transmission even looks like it was painted along with the bell housing! Didn't know the transmission was attached to the bell housing at the Tonawanda Engine facility. Learn something every day! Comments anyone!

It looks like there is over spray on the transmission in that picture and the transmissions were not attached when the block was painted?

No way that oil pan or the bell housing has untouched original factory paint!!!!
And no way the tranny has paint on it from the factory

Yea, I wouldnt hold a lot of stock in that picture. Transmission was nowhere near the engine when it was painted.

OK -- here's the bellhousing on my 396, and what's left of its (orignal ?) paint.

                        Vote away .

Picture #3 is that paint on the transmission bolts too?

Wayne --- no paint on trans-to-bellhousing bolts here. I think Pic #3 was due to tint from the incandescent bulb side-lighting dirt . Here's 2 more, zeroing in on those trans attach bolts and the back face of the bellhousing, which is also orange. This is off a late 396 (ie. Tonawanda).

The trans is an over-the-counter M22 (P1D19C) installed in late '71 by the then owner. He threw the original away !! He was a parts man at Nehl Chevrolet in Marshall TX, so I guess he paid dealer price.

P.S. I have absolutely no idea why the pictures are turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise. In my source file they show correct orientation.

Wayne my orig 396 bell housing (17346) had almost no paint and no overspray on the clutch fork . (It had been out a time or two before me )
