    Alternator Brace - "GT" stamp

Trying to ID an alternator (?) brace - 3/16" thick, 7/8" wide UNTIL it starts to curve and the slot appears, widening to 1 3/16" and then narrowing; about 9 1/2" (outside) and 8 1/2" (inside) to where curve starts; curve to the end (outside) is about 6 1/4". Stamped with a capital "GT". Any guesses?

Loren, a picture would really help.

Re: Alternator Brace - "GT" stamp

      Loren,

I believe that the "GT" represents the manufacturer of the brace. In the last 35+ years I have seen two different braces stamped "GT". The braces in the photo below are for a 67-68 Z28. The top brace is stamped "GT". I also have a different "GT" brace in my "collection" that I believe might be from a Chevrolet truck but I am not really sure. You should post a photo of your "GT" brace. You might have the same "GT" brace as in my "collection". I have about 30 or 40 alternator/generator braces in my "collection".

Pictures are beyond the scope of the computer illiterate, but it is not either of the braces David shows. I'll take a picture and send it to someone.

          Loren,

When I get a chance I will take a photo or two of my "GT" bracket and post it on this thread.

            Loren,

I have 3 of these "GT" braces in my "collection". The one in the photo below was removed from a 1968 Chevrolet truck with V8 engine from a salvage yard in Wilton, NH, on Feb. 19, 1990. I assume that it is original equipment but I may be wrong. I got the other 2 "GT" braces from swap meets. The width at the bottom end is about 7/8" with the width at the bend about 1 1/4". The slot is about 4 1/4" in total length.

David, the 3rd time is the charm - that's the brace. Now if we hang a part # on it to see what else it might be used for....
              Thanks.

I have a 1968 Chevrolet Parts Catalog as well as a 1968 Chevrolet Truck Parts Catalog. Years ago I researched the brace and as best as I can remember it only had Chevrolet truck applications, nothing to get exited about. This "GT" truck brace is similar to the 1963 Chevrolet 283/327 & 1963 Corvette w/AC alternator brace, GM # 3825463. When I get a chance I will post a photo showing both braces for comparison purposes.

                  Loren,

Here is a photo comparing the "GT" truck brace with the 1963 Chevrolet & 1963 Corvette w/AC brace, GM # 3825463. They are only similar in that the width varies (7/8" to 1 1/4" on "GT" brace, 7/8" to 1 1/8" on the 3825463 brace).
