    1954 Tachometer

My 1954 tachometer cable broke, and I bought a replacement, which also broke. It turns out the tachometer is jammed. Is it possible to remove the tachometer from the dash without removing the radio? It's been awhile since I have been under the dash. I searched the other threads, and didn't find any comments on this subject.

    Thanks, Harold Wrede (1322)

The top of the tachometer housing is flat, most likely to allow easy removal. After loosening the mounting screws the rear of the tachometer should drop down and allow you to slide it out without interference from the radio.

      Eric,

Thanks for the quick response. Looks like it's fairly easy, and so I'd better get moving.

yes you can - loosen the cable - remove the bulb/wire - remove the two nuts and lock washers
        it will come out.

I got the tachometer out with only a few head "bumps". The shaft would turn with a wrench on it, but was very stiff. I took it apart and got the shaft freed up with AeroKroil. I cleaned the gears and put a little grease on them, as there was some there before, though pretty dry. It's back together, but the "hand" won't stay in the correct position. Do you know if there is a special mounting procedure, or do I use a dab of Superglue or Loktite to keep it in position. When I took the hand off, it came off the very thin copper colored shaft that is connected to the spring/flywheel gizmo. There does seem to be a spline under the hand, but that is not where it came apart. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Harold
