Since you don't care about cosmetics, are you aware that bolt-on NEW A6 compressors are available? Some use a cast iron housing, as-original. Some use an aluminum housing (like modern compressors).

If you decide to rebuild the compressor, here's an NOS shaft:

I end up buying a new A6 compressor and never had a problem with it.
