Re: 1957 283 283 Camshaft
Have heard some on this site and possibly on the Forum that Speed Pro 097 clones can be ordered thru local parts stores like NAPA, CarQuest.
I have the Speed Pro number somewhere but could take a bit to find it.

I believe that Jeff Reade is the member selling these camshafts. You should be able to contact him through the members list of this board. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Napa Sealed Power SEP CS113R
Summit SLP CS113R
and probably Jegs and others.
FYI, the solid lifters are AT 992, also Sealed Power.

Free Shipping - Sealed Power Mechanical Lifters with qualifying orders of $109. Shop Lifters at Summit Racing.
I've used both above cam and lifters on several engines. AT992 is also used on the solid lifter cam big blocks. Just installed and ran a set on a '67 427/435. The cam I used was also a Sealed Power.... CS 165R
Note that the lash is not identical to original spec on these designs.

Re: 1957 283 283 Camshaft
The Federal Mogul (Sealed Power and Speed Pro brand names) CS113R is an exact duplicate of the ...097 Duntov cam, manufactured to the GM print (as is the CS165R an exact duplicate of the big block SHP cam without a rear journal groove).
You can improve performance - better low end torque and a slightly tamer idle by having Crane custom grind a cam using the Duntov lobes, indexing the inlet POML at 110 deg. ATC and the exhaust POML at 118 deg. BTDC. This yields a LSA of 114 (versus 110.5 deg. with OE indexing) with a slightly later phased inlet event, 110 v. 108.5, and what you get is essentially a mechanical lifter version of the L-79 cam. The price is about 250 bucks.
The lash on the CS165R is different than GM's recommendation because GM's recommendation doesn't jibe with the lobe clearance ramp height (.012") and nominal rocker ratio (1.7:1). The product of those values is .020". The L-78 lash recommendation is .020/.024". It was changed to .024/.028" for the L-72, but the reason is unknown. I recommend .020/.022", cold, using the indexing scheme in the Hinckley-Williams valve adjustment paper.

Re: 1957 283 283 Camshaft
My 63 FI car has the CS113R with AT992 lifters even though I had a NOS in the tube 3736097 cam to use.
At 900 RPM the engine puts out 16" of vacuum. As Duke said the specs are right on.
The CS118R is the replacement 30-30 cam. Some here like the LT1 cam. Can't remember who though.- Top
