'62 oil cannister retainer clip on bolt missing

Changed oil on my '62 yesterday. After reading several posts in archives on subject, see I'm supposed to have a retainer clip on the hollow bolt above the cone. I don't have one. My cone can slide freely up bolt. Do I have a problem. No external leaks, by the way,AFTER, but only after, replacing canister to housing gasket. .

    Bill:

You should have the retainer. LICS has a low cost rebuild kit that includes this retainer. You can also buy one from most hardware stores.....probably under a dollar. You would just push it down into position with a deep socket or piece of tubing.

Ken Hansen (Orindales) would actually machine a groove in the long bolt and install a spring retaining clip/ring during his canister restorations.

Thanks, Larry, BUT, what the problem of not having this clip that limits upward motion of cone? Will the spring push the cone up inside the filter without the retainer clip. I'm using the NAPA/Wix filter element which is of metal construction, including ends. Looks like the metal end would prevent cone from being pushed upward excessively. But I'm asking.

I took my canister apart to thoroughly clean it and destroyed the original retainer in the process. I never replaced it and so far I've had no problems, but it's only been 40 years. Time will tell.

When I rebuilt mine, I had to make a minimum buy of 100 of these clips. I've got about 96 of them left. Send me your address, and I'll mail your 2 of them. I'm away now though, so it won't be until next week. (And then I have to find them when I get home.) They are inside toothed washers.

As Jim Durham points out, and your own experience shows, you can work it without the retainer. The retainer simply holds some tension on the spring which helps to seal the bottom bolt to the metal can to avoid leaks when filling it with oil during a filter changeout. It should not affect the force on the oil filter itself: the spring, and the filter and the canister set lengths do that.

In my case, which has a retainer, the WIX filter sits up about 3/8 inch above the top of the metal can before installation to the engine. During the install and tightening of the center bolt, the WIX filter is pushed down into the metal can against spring tension. It would be the same if no retainer is present.

You can fix it or leave it...........that is up to you.

Thanks to all. Think I'll do without it. "One more thing," you mentioned filling the canister with oil before installing it during an oil change. Is this necessary or suggested in the shop manual?

Simply a good idea...............based on years of (my) practical experience. Is it absolutely necessary, no it is not.

If you want to fill the can with oil prior to assembly without the spring retained it will drip all over the floor.....!

I've done a few of these canisters with the LIC kit and it works well.....But,

...don't originals have 2 spot welds or chisel tabs to hold the spring loaded flange in?

Whenever I restore one using the kit I have to slice those tabs off to get the cone off of the long bolt.

And as Gene mentioned, best not to fill it presently with oil without the spring loaded cone.......ooooops!
