    Muncie rebuild question

I changed the differential ratio when I rebuilt it recently. I when from a 3:36 to a 3:73. I have an M21 (close ratio) and taking off from a stop was bugging me.

I have the Muncie apart and am getting ready to order rebuild kit and some other parts. I am planning to change the speedo drive gear from the larger diameter to the small diameter because of the rear gear change.

Looks like the transmission has been apart before and I want to make sure I put the speedo drive gear in the correct location. The one on there now is 6 5/16" from the end of the shaft (picture attached).

Anyone know if this is correct location for the drive gear?

I don't have the particular dimension you described. However, I do have another dimension. It should be 4-7/8" from the forward end of the speedometer gear to the FLAT surface of the bearing retainer plate.

      Hi Don
You can place the tailhousing on and mark the center of the hole on the main shaft for location. The gear should be center of the hole. I checked the gear within an 1/8" of center and it worked fine. You probably know to heat up the gear to slide it in place. Make a positive stop to keep the gear in place till it cools.
