    70-72 Rear Compartment Surround Fasteners

    Greetings!

I was trying to figure out the correct screws (8) to hold down the storage compartment lid frame to the body. These are the phillips head screws which thread into the j-nuts at the sides and fronts of the pass. side and battery compartments.

The AIM calls these screws P/N 3843505. I noticed this same part number for the (4) screws which hold down the shifter plate to the console. The screws in the shifter plate are black oval head (#6 size head on a #8 screw) but the JG says the rear compartment frame screws should be chrome FLATHEAD.

What is going on here, and what would be the correct style screws for the rear compartment frame? My car has some chrome on the battery compartment end, and some black on the Pass. Side.

    Thanks for any help!

    Mike

Screws for sides and front are the dark Philips flat head ones.. The rear frame to body are the chrome screws with large chrome special flat washer.

On the corners of the console top, we have found original 1970-72 cars with either black oval-head or flat-head Philips screws, and even a mixture on the same car.

        Hi,
I've been amazed at the variety of fasteners used to accomplish these doors!
These are from my mid- January 71.
        Regards,
        Alan

          Thanks Lady and Gentlemen,

I appreciate your input. Alan, the picture helps a lot. I have the same fasteners concerning both washer-head screws and the short machine screw. RE: The remaining two flathead screws (one chrome 3/4" and one black 5/8") where were these located on your surround frame?

          Thanks,

          Mike

Are those really the proper screws shown holding the compartment frame to the floor? The washers are so large they interfere with the frame and they don't look like they are seating very well.

                Hi Mark,
Yes, they're actually typical of production!
Remember, there's a long thin steel reinforcement on the other side of the underbody that these screws mount in.
I think the large washer is there to spread the load generated by the doors opening and closing across the surface of the plastic frame.
                Regards,
                Alan

Thanks Alan, that's good to know as I reassemble my compartment. It seems like the fasteners would fit and look better if the screws going into the door are swapped with those going into the frame and body. But I've learned that what looks right on these cars isn't necessarily TFP.

Oh geeze Alan. Now I see my center console plate screws are wrong. The search for correct screws begins.
