Having an issue with rough running, when accelerating from idle. It runs smooth above 1500 rpm. In checking the distributor, I find that the points gap moves about .004" by pushing the shaft sideways. I put the points on the cam high spot and checked the opening with a feeler gauge. I may be off by .001 plus or minus, but the movement is obvious. I have a NOS service replacement distributor (1961 date?) and that center shaft has essentially zero play. The 1954 original unit also has .030-.040" vertical play. What are the allowable specifications on runout and shaft end play? Assuming the bushings are bad, where can I buy them?

Re: '54 distributor shaft runout
In looking around some more, I found a cut away of a '54 passenger car distributor, and it does not show any shaft bushings. It looks like the shaft runs in the cast iron housing. One supplier says the '54 Vette distributor shaft has bushings, another says no. If it runs in the housing, a repair would require boring out the housing and making bushings for it. Would appreciate advice and help on this topic. Thanks, Harold Wrede- Top

Re: '54 distributor shaft runout
Harvey Edelstein in Illinois used to do them. He did mine decades ago. Not sure if he's still in the biz. I copied this old thread from Corvette Forum.
