    C2 Side exhaust covers

What color should they be on the back side
I have a set of NOS GM side exhaust covers with one light gray and one darker gray on back side
Were originals all one color or were they different , if different did the heat from exhaust change
the color to make them the same
Are the inside of the side pipes judged
    . Thanks Bill

Light gray is later service replacement.

        William -

Yes, to check for presence of the insulators.

I purchased these in 1978 (pair) one is light gray and one is a darker gray on the insulator
will they both pass judging if on the car at the same time

                  Re: C2 Side exhaust covers

I have owned many sidepipe cars over the last 30 years. Plus, I have judged a number of times in that section for what it is worth. The judging guide says they are dark gray when viewed from the front side..no mention of the inner side of the insulator. Probably most judges would deduct for one side of your two colors as a minimum which won't be a life and death deduction or worth the money to change it. At issue with me is all the assembly line insulators I have ever seen (65, 66, 67) are black front and back...or the darkest gray you would ever see. Pictures below for your humor. It surely seems if a car does not have black (dark gray) on the inner side, it should get a deduct of some sort too, but then again an owner can argue the judging guide does not state anything about that. That is just another of the many things not clear in judging manuals. As stated above by a poster, lighter gray is a service replacement insulator.

As for judging manuals, I wish they were written more as an outline and less as a narrative. That would allow for more information like this to be printed. And, it would make it much easier for judges who get "stuck" judging unfamiliar years as happens many times at chapter meets.

                  Other opinions?

L-R: 1. Cover from first known 65 sidepipe car, 2. my used covers, 3. orig insulator separated, 4. after-market light gray, 5. cover from wrecked car

                  6. And the last one is 65#21326 which is a 5 star car now. I took this picture when evaluating the car for purchase and the pipes and covers were factory original. All the body panels were that expected light gray color, but the pipe insulators were black fiberglass.

                    Re: C2 Side exhaust covers

I need to replace a missing exhaust side pipe front insulation piece - how does it attach to the inside of the exhaust cover? Thanks
