does a defective cranking signal valve on a 7360 62 FI affect anything other than cold engine starts? any effect on operating mpg?

Very much so. You will run extremely rich, wash down cylinders, and get terrible gas mileage. Guess how I know!

Agree with Mike 100%, don't go too far as you risk damage to the cyl walls from lack of lubrications as well as diluting the Oil greatly.

If the CSV fails open, you will get black smoke out the tail pipes and the car will be undriveable. It will cold-start as normal but hot starts will probably be difficult to impossible.

If the CSV fails closed (rare but it does happen), the engine will be extremely difficult to start when cold. In fact, odds are it won't start at all. If you can get the engine started, it will perform normally...... until the next time you need to do a cold start.

I pulled the CSV and found it full of a dark brown wax. this is a 7360 FI on a 62. I can manually choke at air intake and starts easily. After a few seconds I manually open the air choke and engine runs fine. Any thoughts?
I purchased a Holley NOS powershot solenoid fuel valve (nitrous). I could not find Parker solenoid. Have heard someone is rebuilding CSV.Any thoughts on a rebuild CSV as apposed to solenoid.

I have no idea what that waxy substance is. It's likely that it plugged up the CSV and gave you problems getting the engine started.

As a substitute for an original CSV, a solenoid valve is a good option. You've got to do some plumbing to make a neat install. The following picture is how I install solenoid valves on '62 units when the owners don't care about preserving an original appearance:

Yes, Frank Antonicelli in PA rebuilds CSVs and manufactures new valves. He does a wonderful job.

Taking nothing away from the quality of Frank's work, I've found the electric valves to be more reliable. Since I don't have my fuelies judged, I value reliability over original appearance.
