I know - hence the 'silly question' and, as we know, the 63 JG has its issues..

It's NOT a silly question. If it's mentioned in the JG, it will be scrutinized when you have your car judged. Good luck in Lakeland.

        Frank,
Your picture is correct with the "taper" to the rear; you will note the thick part of the lens allows light to shine over the driver/passenger shoulder to better see at night and the tapered down end still allows/puts light in the cargo area behind the seats to see in the back area.

And if you believe the production line workers in the 1960's did them all the same way, you do not have a clue about manufacturing. I can assure they came from the factory both ways even if the AIM says one way only

I know all about the factory assembly lines; I grew up near the Ford truck plant in Norfolk, Va that had been around since the 40s IIRC. Many of the workers were my friends. I spent more than a few weekends with them 'loading up' on adult beverages. Not sure I would want the vehicle they built the next Monday morning...

Agree with taper rearward. My philosophy has always been to adjust it to the JG if harm to the part will not be done. In this case the AIM (section 1 sheet B29.00) and the JG agree.
As for the production line and the real world - I also agree it could end up in any direction.
