    Hood decals

What is the general consensus on after market decals when getting your car judged (see pic). What amount of deduction of points would one expect to get with them on?

    Thanks in advance

    Ken

    Ken,

Unfortunately any additional striping results in a complete deduction for your paint score (85 points, I believe). If you want your car judged you're best off buying a second set of decals, removing these, and putting them on later when done with the car's judging career if you wish.

It's really is pretty stupid to have a full paint deduct for a couple of stripes when there is no PAINT deduct if you have a luggage rack, only a deduct for the holes that are there. Some will say, luggage reck was a dealer installed option and stripes weren't. Big deal, the rack even so was not "as it came from the factory"

        Re: Hood decals

Thanks for the reply. I had to ask the question as in the judging reference manual under Body Paint on page 34 sub-reference B at the top of the page it refers to "any custom paint modification" . Since this is a decal and not paint I guess one could argue against a total point deduction.

Anyways I was never crazy about this decal in the first place so I don't have a problem with removing it. I'm thinking a hair dryer should be enough to soften the decal up for removal. Anyone have any other suggestion for removing this decal?

Most auto body stores will also have products to remove labels, stripes, etc. That will help if the hair drier / heat gun doesn't.

Removed decals last night and it looks much better now. I am just amazed at the excellent paint jobs they did on these cars. After 26 years it still looks like it just came off the assembly line.

Russ, I just a friend that went through judging a few years ago with a 69 with a LT1 stripe on the hood and its a full paint deduct. ouch!!!, the truth of the matter is he would of had a lesser deduct to remove the hood from car. he would have removed the decal but it was clear coated over the decal. It really looked great on the car.
