70 Carpet Jute Padding and unbacked carpet

Has anyone found a supplier for 80/20 loop carpet without any backing? Has anyone found a supplier for the original brown jute padding?

I am also curious of it is possible that the original jute padding turned brown given the tar like paper between it and some of the carpet or if it tuned brown like news paper after sitting in the air for a bit.

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Hi Bill,
I didn't find any evidence to indicate the black layer had a long term effect on the color of the jute underlayment.
I did however find that the jute in the underlayment was quite different than the jute used on the firewall, transmission tunnel and upper back side of the seat bulkhead.
    71 not 70.
    Regards,
    Alan

Wheel well underlayment color. Note 'tight' texture.

    Rear compartment floor underlayment color.

The jute on the upper back side of the seat bulkhead carpet. Notice 'loose' texture. Also note… this piece of carpet is unlike the rest of the carpet in the car…. it has NO backing on the carpet itself. Also notice the nice cut on the edge that was pushed down between the back of the seat bulkhead and the 3 compartment frame.

Bill, I think the carpet installation can be had from AK. Generally the tar paper color stuff is broken apart or has gotten wet and. I did a friends 68 and we replaced it all AK use to sell.

        Thank you Edward.

I will be chatting with AK this week.

          HI Alan,

Great pics once again. Amazing that they used 3 different jute types of Jute padding.

Wonder why everyone makes the gray stuff and not the brown.

          Kind Regards,

          Bill

I tried Romeo Ent. on my carpet and he seems to know his stuff- What experience has others had with Romeo ?

            Thanks,

IMHO I would take all the info Alan has provided in your other post and make your decision from there. His pictures tell the story.

I have Romeo and ACC in my 70. Romeo in the front, ACC in the back. I like the Romeo better than the ACC. Based on Alan's input I am likely to go with Al Knock and reuse an original heel pad once I have one in my hands and I will redo most if not all my carpeting.

I will be speaking with Al Knock this week regarding the the backing and jute padding. I already have a black 80/20 loop carpet sample coming from AK

              Kind Regards,

              Bill

                Hi Bob,
I have a full set of Romeo carpet sitting in my basement.
I don't think the carpet itself is all that much like the original. I have the std 80/20 carpet. I found the loops in the Romeo carpet to be loose and of varying length which gives the carpet a shaggy look.
The heel pad while more similar to the original than the Al Knock heel pad is easily detectable as being different than the original.
Many people have stories about getting their carpet from Romeo.
I waited FAR longer than had been promised, received only 2 pieces when it was finally shipped. The rest followed weeks later with one of the pieces even being the wrong color. The piece in the proper color took several more weeks.
                Regards,
                Alan

Re: 70 Carpet Jute Padding and unbacked carpet

I just wanted to follow up with everyone regarding the carpet.

It seems the unbacked carpet Alan identified on the bulkhead may actually have a VERY thin layer of latex. I spoke with a few different suppliers and you can still get the latex backed carpet in 80/20 loop. They all indicated the latex was needed to keep the carpet from falling apart as woven in manufacturing. The latex backing can be very difficult to see on black carpet but on the original green 70 80/20 loop carpet, that someone was kind enough to give me, you can see the black latex backing.

If someone has a good contact at AK I would like to know if his carpet can be ordered from his manufacturer with latex backing. I spoke with customer service a couple times and became a little frustrated as the customer service person really did not understand the request.

ACC and others will sell the latex backed carpet by the yard and I have identified at least one other manufacturer that will sell the latex backed carpet by the yard as well.

The second part of my follow up pertains to the jute padding. What is the weight of the padding? I may had found a supplier that has the tan/brown colored underlayment. If they do have the underlayment their minimum quantity is 1,200 lbs. However, they may be willing to sell smaller pieces.

                  Thanks,

                  Bill

                    Hi Bill,

I would recommend contacting Rich Mozzetta. He worked with Al Knoch on a change to their C1 turquoise interior parts recently. I'm sure he has the inside track!

                      Bill,

After going through all of this effort be sure to then have carpet made with the rows going in the correct direction. There was a recent thread discussing the "cornrow" pattern and how to orient them. I'd hate to see you go through all of this work and then get that wrong.

Does it matter which way cut pile (deluxe) carpet is oriented? Or is that only a consideration for loop (standard) carpet?

                          Hi Patrick,

Do you know if the AK carpet set comes with the loops in the correct orientation or do I have to specify?

                          Thanks,

                            No, it does not.
You will have to have them custom made.
