1967 3888366 5 Blade Fan Black Color Shade ?

I have acquired a original in exceptional condition. Not specified in the 1967 JG, and after a long archive search, I've found inconclusive data on the shade of black for these fans.

This thread discussed that originals were dip painted, therefore should/could have drips showing, but no specifics regarding color. The fan is original but not sure what shade of original black it was.

Is it Semi-Gloss, Gloss, or Semi-Flat?

Rich, in similar threads below there talking gloss, But I am thinking a semi gloss applied with a thicker coat will give you the result you'll want. a cross between the two glosses. sometimes the gloss looks like a mirror finish and really in my opinion its to much gloss. I would also note the Fan shroud if metal should be a close match to the fan.

I vote high gloss. Looks like semi gloss after a few days of driving the car.

These fans were GLOSS black. However, they were not a high gloss black (e.g. they were not the gloss level of air cleaner bases).

OMG I don't know what to do. How about purple?

I'm gathering that gloss is the typical flavor.

I bet if I paint it outside in this crazy Florida January heat and humidity, it'll cloud up just right. Painting anything other than flat black around here lately has been a real challenge. I ran the A/C in the shop all day yesterday and about to turn it on any minute now as it's getting sticky out there again.

Hi Rich,
I use Seymour gloss black "LACQUER". It's not as glossy as enamel spray paints.

17 now, 14 by morning.
It's the coldest we've had yet this year. So far only used the snow blower once.

Oh, and I can't stand humidity, so I'll stay here for now.

Keep in mind that there was only ONE black prime paint system at St. Louis (sometimes referred to as "dip-primed", but it was actually "flow-coated"); every unpainted raw steel part, from alternator braces to wheels to radiator supports [except the birdcage], went through that Flow-Coat system on an overhead conveyor, got the same paint, and the same "semi-flat" gloss. Flow-Coat was a continuous circulating system that required about 300 gallons of paint to charge it, so there was no "changing the paint".

Thank You John....So I suppose my next question would be.....Were these fans painted in St Louis or at the manufacturer? In this case, Hayes-Albion Company. I haven't painted it yet, it's all ready, media blasted, dusted, ready and waiting. I have 9 types of black here.

1- Enamel Gloss
2 -Lacquer Gloss
3- Lacquer Semi Flat
4- Enamel Semi Flat
5- Enamel Flat
6- Lacquer Flat
7- Lacquer Semi-Gloss
8- Enamel Semi-Gloss
9- Enamel Low Gloss

My Semi-Flat is the Krylon 5-Ball Industrial Lacquer and I also have a good supply of the Semi-Flat Krylon Enamel. Would you recommend one of those? I'd really rather use a enamel for longevity.

I agree. If you feel it is too glossy after painting, let it dry good and then use some some polishing compound or 0000 steel wool to reduce the gloss to whatever level you desire.
