    Half-Height Nuts

I'm reading my 1962 Judging Guide the other night, and on page 175 I find that the ground straps are attached to the exhaust pipe hangers on top of the existing nut with a "half-height" nut. There's a nice picture, so I now know what it is. I'd never seen one or even heard of one before.

Does anybody know where I can get them?

    Chris,

They sound like standard jam nuts, which are about half as thick as regular nuts. Here's a description:

Jam nuts in stock. Grades 2, 8. Plain finish, zinc plated. Brass, stainless steel. Low prices, volume discounts, fast service. Large selection of fasteners.

Thank you Gary. Looking through the AIM, I believe that they are p/n 124920. Section 8.900 of the Parts Manual describes this part as a cadmium plated 5/16-24 jam nut.

Anybody know where I can find that size? I'm guessing my friendly local hardware store won't carry it. Is that size used for anything else? Also need a 5/16 external tooth lock washer to go under this nut.

        Chris,

McMaster-Carr has zinc plated jam nuts in that size for about $5.30 per hundred, plus S&H, but their minimum order will likely be a killer. Your local hardware store might indeed have them. Cad plated ones will be much harder to find.

          Chris,

What's the part number for the external tooth washer?

            Hi Gary,

I'm pretty sure there is no minimum order with McMaster-Carr. I've placed several small orders with them.

There are many, many suppliers for jam nuts and star washers on the interweb.

The p/n for the external tooth lock washer is listed in my AIM as 178537.

I found the lock washers today at my local Home Depot, both in stainless and in zinc plated. Home Depot also had 5/16 jam nuts. But only in coarse threads. Not in fine.

It's now discontinued. There might still be some of them around, though.
