65 radio speaker installation non A/C

The old speaker virtually fell out but cannot get the new speaker back in. I pulled speaker grill out, painted it and reinstalled it. Do I need to pull grill back out? Have both seats and steering wheel off and out. Any tricks? Concerned about damaging speaker.

Hi Dave, I recently changed mine in my 67 and I removed the passenger radio side panels and from the passenger side it was a fairly easy procedure... I'm sure that others can chime in also....

On my 63 I removed the glove box and radio side panel which gave me good access to the passengers side. Reaching around to the drivers side was more difficult but possible.

Thanks for all of the tips but at 69 years old and being a little portly, I found that taking the seats out, side covers, glove box, clock and loosening the defroster duct at the two passenger side nuts made the job easy without damaging the speaker. Bill's tip on moving the defroster duct was an especially good one. Going to Lakeland this week.
