    What Paint?

I am going to repaint the flat black inside the speedo/tach bezels this week. Is there a preferred brand/color of spray paint to use or should I just grab a can of Krylon and spray them (with proper prep of course)?

    Thanks Rey

    Re: What Paint?

In the past (very distant, not recently) I used SEM Trim Black on my 71 console plate as well as some exterior trim on a 79. My recollection is it was chosen because of it's ability to cover well without a lot of film build. In my opinion, many paints look too heavy when applied to interior pieces. I would suggest getting a can of current production and try it before using it on your dash parts. Chip.

Krylon 1613 works perfectly. I did take the extra step of using SEM etching primer. I used a razor blade and lacquer thinner to detail the exposed edge.

      Kind Regards,

        Hi Bill
Apparently Krylon has changed the numbering system and paint styles. What I found is 9158 Satin or 9198 Matte finish. So I am going to give the 98 Matte finish a try and see how it does. If it's not right I'll just strip the parts and try something else.
        Thanks for your input.

          Hi Rey,

Check their industrial listings. 1613 should still be available.

          Kind Regards,

          Bill

As noted in your other thread on the same subject, I'd use the SEM Trim Black. Nicer product than virtually anything with the Krylon name on it, and the color/sheen is right on to the original.

I Second (or Third) Paul's and Patrick's suggestion of SEM trim black. It is far superior to the Krylon product. Better coverage, better adhesion and perfect sheen.

to add to Joe and Pat, I find that at the right temp Sems (warm 70 degrees) flows great out of nozzle, which to me means a smoother texture.

To all those nice people who advised me to use SEM Trim Black paint I thank you all.
Now -- My local SEM deal only stocks the Trim Black Gloss, is this the same stuff all of you are talking about???? If so I will go tomorrow and get a can and return my Krylon to Wal-Mart.
                  Thanks much for the advice

                      Re: What Paint?

Rey, I was not aware of SEM's offering 2 "Trim Black" paints, but after searching the tcpglobal.com site I see there is Trim Black (39143) and also Gloss Trim Black (39063). Numbers given are both aerosol cans. As usual, I would spray some out as a test and let dry to see if it suits you before spraying on your car. Tomorrow, I will try to see if I still have a can that I used before to check the number. Chip.

No, you do not want the gloss.
Odds are they can order in the correct shade, or in your other thread I gave you a link to buying it on Amazon.

Ralph has the same number (39143) that is on my OLD can of Trim Black. Amazingly, that can has to be at least 15 years old, and it still sprays well! New Krylon and especially Eastwood paints are always a crap shoot when I go back to use them. I am sure newer formulations of paint are to blame. Chip.
