    C-2 Weather strip installation

I have read all the post about which glue is best and how sloppy it should look ,etc. etc. I have decided to go with Weldwood Contact cement for correct color , and just apply it a little messy for show. This will be the first time on this restoration where being a little careless will be a good thing !

Now I just have two questions .

    (1) I assume that where ever the rubber touches two sides , or surfaces of the car , doors and deck lid for example , both sides or surfaces should be glued . Correct ?

    (2) Anybody have any tips for how to apply the glue and strip to the "Deck Lid" without too many contortions ?

    Thanks ,

    Jim

Jim, There should be a brush attached to the cap, and yes both surfaces, take your time and work a short area at a time, once you set in place it will not be easy to remove without damage. I think most of the guys here use the 3M yellow weather strip adhesive and spread with a acid brush. again small area's as it to sets up ,but gives you time to work.

Forget the 3M yellow 'gorilla snot' (appears nothing like original) and stick with the Weldwood. I use it in conjunction with a hand held hair dryer. It'll make the stuff quicker set up quicker than you can say 'cheese and crackers'. Still may need some blue painters tape to insure all parties play together nicely.

        Hello Ed,

If I am reading this correctly , you are saying to do the long pieces, like the deck lid piece, in sections. That is to apply glue only to a portion of the lid and weather strip ,then place it on, let it set up, then glue another section, let it set up , then etc. etc. ?

          Hello Mike ,

I read about the Weldwood on this forum , It was either that or some Air Plane stuff called Pliobond, as being the most correct .

I would like a more detailed explanation of how you use the blue painter's tape to assist you and yet not make it part of the final result !

          Thanks ,

          Jim

            Jim,

One thing to keep in mind with the weldwood contact cement, you will not separate it without removing the paint or tearing the rubber.

              Tim,

              Good heads up

Isn't that the case with all of this stuff though ?

I used a lot of blue tape, I t thing I did was take the entire weatherstrip and taped it to my door (doors were off the car lying on a table for ease of installation), then I left the w/strip on the door for a couple of days to get acclimated (mine had been in a bag and had been rolled up) and then I used the "yellow elephant snot" and a acid brush and as I applied the glue on the door put the blue tape back over it and slowly worked around the door. 15 - 20 pieces of blue tape later the w/strip aligned perfectly with my door, I removed the tape after a couple of days and was done. Now getting my doors to align was another matter....

Jim, The contact will set up very quickly depending on outside air temp, when you apply the weather strip in about 12 inch sections you can control the attachment easier, as said once applied you will not be able to move or slide around it maybe a little easier with another hand to hold the weather strip while you apply, but can be done by yourself.

                    Jim,

If you use the 3m superweatherstrip adhesive it needs to be applied to both surfaces just like the contact cement. Let it tack off and put the pieces together.

FWIW, I used the contact cement when I installed my convertible top years ago and when the two surfaces met each other it was stuck for good so be careful with that stuff. I doubt if that was the material used at St. Louis.

Nobody has any clever techniques for how to stretch the Deck Lid weather strip ?
I can think of a few , but I am always amazed at how someone else here thought of the perfect way !

                          Jim,

Whatever you do don't buy one of those NOS deck lid weatherstrips, get a no puff weatherstrip. I think when I replaced the deck lid rubber I marked the halfway point and pulled it so that hit the ridge in the middle of the lid. Have someone help you and remove the lid.

                            Tim,

Thanks. That's one of the things I thought of . I bought the Corvette Rubber Co. Stuff , so I am good there !

I was hoping to avoid removing the lid , as it fits so perfect now .
