    Mufflers for a '64

What are people's best recommendations (best fit and originality scores) for replacement mufflers for a '64? I used my last NOS set on my roadster and need some for my coupe now. Thanks.

Mike, I brought a set of Corvette Central one piece pipe and muffler (N11's) for my 63 and fit great. As far as original I think they will do carbon steel, I went for the aluminized pipes and mufflers as I know there is a small deduct.

Try Gardner. They do carbon steel and aluminum pipes. I put a set of aluminum N11 pipes on my 300hp 63, sounds like 340 engine.

They leave the welding of the muffler to the rear pipe to you. Makes for a better fit.

Give them a call, nice people.

Thanks guys, I have the original pipes/clamps, etc., from the engine to the mufflers (in very nice condition after 30K miles or so), but sometime about 30 years ago the mufflers were replaced by some Walker things, so need to weld up some new ones.

Neither the Gardner nor the Corvette Central is great, and they will each receive similar configuration deductions. The benefit is that the CC unit will at least sound original. I'd see look at cost, and see if the CC units can be had with carbon steel inlets that you can match to your current exhaust.

            Michael,

If they are still in business, try Allen's Stainless. I bought a complete N11 aluminized system from them for my 327/300 equipped '64 back in 2004. It fit great and sounds original. I did have to remove about one (1) inch of length off of the outlet of each muffler to make the exhaust tip lengths look correct in length. The car has been through a local Chapter Flight Judging meet two (2) point deduct for NTFP system, the 2012 North Central Regional a two (2) point deduct (NTFP) and the 2014 National Convention where it received a three (3) point deduction for service replacement pipes and no blackout on the mufflers.

If after you are through having the car flight judged I recommend drilling a 1/16"or 3/32" diameter hole at the low point of the front facing muffler cap. This will allow condensation to drain out and make the exhaust system last longer.

I will try to post some pictures of it in a day or two.

            Regards,

            James West

Over the past couple of years I have bought several sets of carbon steel through Corvette Central. Thy fit and sound correct and delivery takes only several weeks.

+1 on the Corvette Central N11 pipes and mufflers. Put carbon steel ones on my car about 1-1/2 years ago and like the sound. Buy the complete deal and catch it at the right time and it is free shipping also! Fits perfect. Clamps and tips are no where near original. Use your old stuff if you have it. I did buy some of Greg Thompson's clamps recently and replaced the old ones I had that were close but not quite right. Greg's are supposed to be the best from what i was told in Denver. good luck. Can't wait to see her!

Thanks guys, another question. This car is a fuelie and has original 2 1/2" pipes, but the N11 is not listed on the window sticker as an option, do I still want N11 mufflers? Was that part of the FI option in '64?

Allen's Stainless is still in business. I Googled their site to verify.

Thanks, but it appears all their mufflers are stainless steel. I need carbon steel.

They offer aluminized and stainless. They don't have plain carbon steel listed. They may be able to build them. I have no idea how they do against the judging standards. http://www.allencorvetteexhaustsystems.com/

                              You need carbon steel pipes.
The original mufflers weren't carbon steel.
