1963 Steering Column Lower Support Question

My question is for 63 owners but may apply to the 63-66 cars.

I was looking in the 1963 AIM, sect. 9 sheet 4 showing the lower steering column support attachment to the firewall. This attachment shows a #9 3789670 screw assembly which is (I believe) a pointed tip 3/4" long with a serrated washer. This picture also shows a #10 103340 washer under the #9 screw.

Is there a flat washer used under the screw assembly and could it's purpose be for the retainer used for the clutch spring (shown in sect. 7). I know this is anal but unless my description of part #9 is incorrect I don't understand the extra washers purpose. Any original cars out there that could verify the screw assembly and extra washer.

    TIA, Tim

    Tim,

The clamp is held by a screw that has a shoulder built on the screw to provide the necessary tension without distorting the clamp when it is pulled down tight.
If you need a picture, I can supply one later on this evening.

JR, Thanks for the reply, I am not talking about the clamp. My question is about the screw assembly and washer, part 8 and 9 in the picture.

I mined this picture of the 1965 AIM page from another post but the parts are the same except the screw assembly part # is different than the 1963 AIM as I believe this has to do with the serrated attached washer on the screw assembly.

My question is about the #8 washer under the screw assembly. I have never seen a extra washer at this location and am wondering if it's got something to do with the attachment of the clutch return spring retainer.

Check page 145 for the clutch spring retainer.

It calls for two washers and two screws in the AIM for that page. The screw is also used in many other locations but not the washer.

          Harry,

The section of the AIM showing the return spring retainer does not show any detail in this area and references section 9.

Correct, the spring retainer bracket uses a different hole in the firewall than the jackmast.

              Harry,

I am confused, the 3789670 screw assembly is a screw and captured serrated washer (in all applications). In section 9 sheet 4 there is a call out for an additional washer at the lower support attachment location, part 103340 (washer).
