    69 L46 ignition shielding

The car I am restoring did not have a single piece of ignition shielding on it when I bought it. I know it was drag raced and my guess is the shielding was a bit of a pain to work on the car at the track and they got long tossed.

I now need all the bits for a complete ignition shield. I am still trying to determine what all is included. I would prefer to use OEM as opposed to reproductions. Two questions - Any opinions on whether the repro parts available are OK for judging and appearance? Any suggestions on who/where I could get a complete set?

    Thanks for your help,

    Rich

I give some opinions since you haven't got any responses yet.

I'm restoring a 66 327/350HP. I had the original top shielding and a couple of other pieces. For at least the C2s the top is stainless steel, so I was able to take out some minor dents and scratches and polish the top. I believe judges can easily tell an original top from a repro due to the crimps and welds where the cover is assembled. I don't know if that is the case with 69s, but if it is, I would suggest at least trying to find an original top.

For the other pieces, I bought all new reproduction pieces from Paragon and everything fit very well. As I stated, I had two original pieces, but they were rusted pretty bad. I'm not a judge, but I could not tell much difference in the repro pieces and the two original pieces.

You could keep an eye on Ebay and may find good OEM stuff there, but you really have to look every day.

If you want to see the whole set, your AIM should show all the pieces, or check out Paragon's on-line listing. They and other sell what they say is the complete set, and you can see the pieces in their on-line listing.

      Don,

Thanks for the reply. using originals for the top shielding and reproductions for the items less visible is a great compromise. I have assembled a list of the parts I need. let the shopping begin.

      Thanks,
      Rich

Shielding. 69 Shielding comes up quite a bit on ebay. I am not an expert, but I am pretty sure early shielding was a little different than late. The chrome on the originals was a flash chrome and very thin as a result.

Make sure you get the two V shields on the side of the block that go with non safety motor mounts as that is what was on a 69. 70 and later were notched for the safety motor mounts.

Hopefully you have your AIM handy and can make a list of all the part numbers related to the shielding.
