    Buying a Corvette in Connecticut...

I'm about to buy back my '57 Corvette that I sold at Carlisle way back in 1996. Needless to say, I'm elated. Can someone enlighten me about the rules for buying a car in Connecticut? Is it a title state and if so, does the title have to be notarized? I've known the present owner for years. Can I just go up to his house and give him a cashiers check and he signs the title over to me? Is it a simple process or do I need to bring my Lawyer with me?

Thanks for any hints on this subject to make it go as smoothly as possible. Patrick

I'm not a lawyer, but i think it all depends on what you need to register and license the car in your home state. I live in Virginia and have purchased cars in Mass, New Jersey, and Oklahoma and have not had a problem. I know I also got bills of sale on at least two of them. On one we transacted the sale at the sellers bank and had the bill of sale notirized there. I can't recall for sure on the others.

call you home state DMV and see what they require

Patrick, the link para below is a cut and paste from a CT DMV webpage- it partially answers your question. Being that the car you are going to purchase is more than 20 years old it may not have a title - the big issue is what are the requirements for the state that you live in. I purchased my '64 from an owner in Georgia and registered it in VA. GA is not a title state for cars built before 1986, VA requires all cars to have titles. It involved a lot of paperwork that had to be signed by both the seller & buyer. Check the requirements for your state.

I have purchased an older vehicle in Connecticut, but the seller does not have a title. He says that the vehicle does not require a title. How do I register the vehicle?

The State of Connecticut no longer requires title certificates for vehicles that are older than 20 model years. In order for you to register the vehicle, you must have a Supplemental Assignment of Ownership (form Q-1) and a copy of the last registration certificate. You must show continuity of ownership from the last registered owner to you.

If the seller has the title, have him sign it on the back side (were it says seller). You do not have to have your name on that paper. Check with your state DMV you my need a bill of sale from the seller, they might take a hand written one.

If you register your car as Classic car, used to be antique auto, your personal property tax can only be a maximum of $500.00, that is until our Governor Malloy figures a way to repeal it.
