C2 Fuel tank sending unit restoration - WHO?

    Hello Everyone,

I'm needing to send out my fuel tank sending unit for restoration and didn't see too much of late as to who are the recommended vendors for this service.

I see John Wolf & Co. http://www.antiqueinstrument.com and Bob's Speedometer http://www.bobsspeedometer.com are two names that come up. Are there any others?

I would appreciate any recent experience with any of the above companies. THANKS in advance.

Take a look at the thread link below. I had my done by John Wolf & Co. There's a picture that shows some of what it looked like before, and a couple of the after. It looked great. My car is still under restoration, so I can't confirm whether it works or not, but I did bench test it and it was within specs.

They offer two different options. With and without re-plating. I did go for re-plating since it originally was plated. I can't remember where, but somewhere in my research I found that they were tin plated (not zinc). Not sure why, but the indication was not to plate with anything else but tin.

I used John Wolfe myself with good results. Didn't implement the replating option as unit cannot be readily seen. Functions as it should.

Actually that appears to be an old design float that will be affected by a 10% ethanol blend & dissolved by a 15% blend.

Another option is to acquire a new sender designed for ethanol fuels, remove the mount disc and replace it with the original mount disc. I know of someone who has done this on several senders with success and I was contemplating doing that myself on the next one.

The mount plate is brazed onto the new units. The right amount of heat and it slips off.

This is what a C1 sender looked like ....

The new units have a circuit board with thick film resistors as opposed to the wire-wound type.

Wonder if anyone has taken to outer housing with the rheostat/resistor from a new sender and mounted it the bottom housing cover (the part that is brazed to the tube). In looking at some of the new ones on line, the housing and float arm look very much like an original.

Don, See previous post....It has been done.

Here is a reproduction/replacement sender.....Ignore the float as it was on a original and I swapped to the new one on the original I restored. You can see how the tube is brazed onto the disc plate.

The original I had was in decent condition and functional, albeit looking a bit tired so I took it apart and cleaned it. I layered in some silver solder on the face and it came out looking better. It back in the car and working fine.

I also used John Wolfe. They do not supply the sock filter. Any suggestions where to purchase for 68 ? Thanks, Jeff

                          Jeff,

I bought the sock from GM a few years ago. I can't remember the GM part number, but it's in the DB archives.
