Which is the correct brush set for my '62 300 hp? I have been offered several sets that "fit" and/or "will work" - but what set is factory correct? Thanks.

Well, strictly speaking, the original brushes for your generator were GM #1906956. These are embossed '956'. However, these were discontinued in January, 1969 and replaced by GM #1932506, sometimes embossed '462'. The latter were available until quite recently when they were finally discontinued without supersession.
You can also use Standard Motor Products #RX63. These are virtually identical to the original, will function PERFECTLY, and, believe me, no one will ever know they're not the 1906956.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

David,
I have just used what the dish out without any problems. Even put the brushes in my airplane generators. There are special brushes for high altitude airplanes and I think they have copper added. Any good auto parts should have good brushes. NOW the important part is cleaning the commutator and between the segments in the commutator.

Attached are photos of the original GM #1906956 brushes [not for sale] used for your application. As I mentioned, these were discontinued in January, 1969 and replaced by the GM #1932506. Note that they are embossed '956'. However, other than the embossment that absolutely no one will ever see, I don't think you'll find them to be much different than the SMP RX63.
