    57 interior red/orange color

Can anyone tell me if the red/orange color of the interior paint (dash, etc. for a '57 is the same color as the dash pad, the door pads, the door panels, kick panels, seats, etc. etc.? The person painting our car said the paint chip he sent to the national judge ok'd the paint, yet it's quite a bit more "orange" than the "Al Knoch" seats or the other vinyl parts I have for the interior... to the point it's almost glaring. Some of the vinyl interior parts are from different venders, but are the same color and different from the paint color. I'm concerned that the dash color and the dash pad are really going to conflict in the red'orange color. Is there a way to tell what is actually correct? I have heard there was some variation in paint but surely not this much.... or is there?

    Alan -

Both of the 57's I restored (in '94-'97) were Venetian Red/Beige interiors, and I found the same level of variation between the "soft" parts and the lacquer paint; it was considered "typical" at the time.

Alan, the paint on my upper/lower dash, my door panels, steering wheel, and dash pad are all original. I'm not sure about my seat covers. They were covered with other covers for many years. Carpet is reproduction. I'm not sure if it helps on a black car, but there's quite a variation in reds... not that it bothers me. My car is also not a judging candidate.

Thank you both for your quick replies... I see in the pictures John's car is very close to the paint color as is Todd's steering column... and there certainly is a difference.... The car in question was painted over once before early on so there is no original paint good enough to match. I'm just too "color sensitive" I guess, but excited after 15+ years to see the paint go on.

In the old days of 1970-1980, those 56-57 owners, [including me] often used Chevy ''ENGINE ORANGE'' rattle can paint. It was a perfect match on original cars we were ''restoring''. It was used on touch up stone chips for years. Remember.........we drove these cars to work and play.

Alan, I'm in the same camp as you. I was quite taken aback at how "red" the seat covers, door panels, dash vinyl, etc. looked when I received them for my '57 project a few months ago. I had the original door panels (not usable, but quite orange in color) and I took off the sheet metal strip on the bottom to reveal the covered up (non faded?) vinyl, and had my interior/trunk paint mixed to match that, which matched the original paint under the conv. deck lid pretty well, too. I had a '57 back in the '70s and always referred to the color as "orange", and my brother had a '57 as well that looked just the same, but of course that car was 13 years old when I bought it. Back then you couldn't buy seat covers, so a local upholstery shop ordered a roll of vinyl for a '69 Camaro Pace car interior to make some, and it matched about perfectly. Some of the guys here that might remember if there was any contrast when new would be interesting to hear from. I was only 2, and can't remember . With all that said, I'm just glad that this stuff is being made at all since we are such a small market. In this pic, everything is a little washed out, (dash rail looks too pink; gas tank cover looks too orange) but you can see the contrast of the dash to dash rail. Google "1957 Corvette interior images" and you will see we certainly aren't alone.
