62 speedometer needle bounce

The speedo needle is steady if I remove the cable assembly from the transmission and use a drill motor to operate the speedometer. I removed speedometer gear assembly from the transmission. I noticed if I thread the cable to the gear assembly, the gear is pushed away from the gear housing 5/16." Should I drill through the gear to remove a restriction so the excess cable has a place to extend to? Could I grind the end of the cable without having the strands unravel? Buy another cable?

Ken, I had to grind some off my 64 tach cable on the tach side, was too long to seat, worked out fine.

I may be wrong but if you remove the restriction in the driven gear, you will have trans oil climbing up the speedo cable.

Stephen, The restriction in the gear stopping oil from going into the speedometer cable makes sense. Thanks for the information.
