Well I tried to pick the lock, no joy there. I then inserted the door key and vibrated it with a palm sander as I jiggled the key and pushed it in and out, very long shot no go. I then called a few local lock smiths and asked their advice, one said he had some tryout keys and if that failed he could replace the core w/o hurting the switch. Short story the tryout keys didn't work so he drilled the core installed a new one and keyed it to the door key I had , total cost 45 bucks , a deal. Again thanks for all your replies . Jeff

Re: Ignition switch tumbler removal w/o key update
Jeff,
Thanks for the update. I'm glad you were successful in the end. And I agree that $45 is a bargain.
Drilling locks is a locksmith's last resort. But it's sometimes the only resort. I've done it once with a '66 spare tire lock that had a valuable case and a core I was happy to replace. Similar to your situation, albeit with an ignition in your case.
One of my hopes is that before I die I will get to see someone be successful opening a lock with tryout keys. I'm not that hopeful.
