Question on rear strut rod clearance

    Guys,

Looking at the clearance of the rear strut rods and wondering if this looks right. There is about 3/8" clearance combined on the side of the strut rod end where it mounts to the rear diff strut rod brace. Would seem a little sloppy to me but I'm not sure. Please see the pics of the amount of clearance and let me know if you think it is reasonable. The orientation of the pic is a little different but in them I've moved the strut rod from one end to the other on the mounting bolt. Thanks.

Re: Question on rear strut rod clearance

    Hi Mike,
Aren't there typically retainers/caps installed on each side of the bushing?
I don't see them in your pictures.
In my 71 AIM they're item #5 on UPC4, Sheet A-5; the Strut Rod page in the Rear Suspension Section.
    Regards,
    Alan

Mike, there are special serrated washers that have to fit on either side of the strut bushing. It'll be a lot tighter when you put them in...

So what year car is it? Makes a difference in the size of washers used. The first picture shows the two sizes, with replacement inserts.

Notice the second of the completed strut, the rubber of a factory unit sticks out past the inserts on each side.

Thanks again guys. I will double check my AIM and my hardware for the missing washers.
